M2 gas mask
French-made but used by Italian troops, this mask was recovered on the Asiago Plateau in a half-collapsed tunnel, difficult to penetrate but definitely worth it.
It was one of the best masks, especially for the long protection against harmful substances which exceeded one hour.
It consisted of a multilayer swab with two neutralisers, one made of castor ricin against phosgene and chlorine. It was then covered with waxed cloth to prevent the neutralisers from evaporating. The filtering surface extended to the entire mask, including the eyepieces protected by cellophane lenses (destroyed over time).
It was stored in a waxed bag or inside a tin box and carried on the shoulder.
